The Power of Poker HUD: How to Best Utilize the Info You Have

Having a poker HUD (Heads Up Display) while playing online is a huge advantage. Unlike with live poker, where you have to try your best to memorize players’ tendencies, a HUD provides you with a wealth of information that you gather as you play. No effort is required on your part.

All the information gathered in this way is displayed on your screen in the form of different numbers. While a HUD doesn’t need your assistance to gather these stats, you’ll need to learn how to correctly interpret them. This learning process may take some time and effort but it will be well worth it.

Understanding Different HUD Numbers

When you first fire up a HUD, you might feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information on your screen. All these numbers marked with different colors and acronyms don’t really mean much if you don’t know what you’re looking at.

Powerful poker software solutions like DriveHUD are capable of displaying a variety of statistical information on your opponents. To begin with, though, you should focus your attention on some of the most important ones such as:

  • VPIP – a number telling you how often someone gets involved in their own volition, i.e. what’s the percentage of hands they choose to play of all the hands you saw them get dealt into.
  • PFR – players can enter the pot by either calling or raising. PFR % tells you just how often they tend to raise.
  • 3-bet % – when facing a raise in front of them, how frequently does a player decide to re-raise (3-bet)?
  • C-bet % – this flop stat tells you how frequently a player will bet on the flop when checked to them provided they were the preflop raiser.
  • WTSD – of all the hands a player does decide to play, how many of them do they end up taking to a showdown?

If you master these few essential stats, you’ll have a big advantage over the field, especially at the lower stakes. As you move up, you’ll have to deal with more and more players who use HUD themselves and know how to put it to good use.

The important thing to keep in mind is that these numbers aren’t just there for show. When interpreted correctly, they’ll tell you just what kind of adjustments you need to make against a particular player. They’ll tell you about their leaks, weakness, and strong points, so you’ll be able to come up with effective strategies against them.

Value of the HUD Information

What you should know about HUD stats is that their value and applicability increases with the number of hands you have on a particular opponent. While you might be able to get a general idea of someone’s play based on a couple of hundred hands this is hardly enough to make any definite conclusions.

While a HUD is a very powerful weapon, it is only as strong as the database it gets its information from. You should be careful not to jump to conclusions based on small hand samples. Once you’ve played a few thousand hands with a particular player, though, you can start making much more effective adjustments based on the stats you have.

Making a HUD Your Own

Once you become comfortable with a HUD and learn how to interpret all the different information on offer, you can make further adjustments to make even better use of it.

If you’ve watched some poker videos, you might have noticed that not all HUDs look the same. This is because players have different preferences in terms of how they want to display all the different stats. You have a lot of freedom at your disposal to build a HUD interface that works best for you.

If you aren’t too experienced with all this, there are plenty of premade solutions that are free to download. You can get the one or two that you like and then toy with them further if you feel there is a way to improve them and make them more effective.

At the end of the day, as a serious player, you’ll spend a lot of time almost every day staring at those numbers. The least you can do for yourself is arrange them in a way that feels most comfortable for you and ensures you have quick access to the information you find crucial for your decision-making process.
