After 4 days of intense poker, the winner of Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller in now known and is none other than Nick Petrangelo . The win, however, didn’t come easy. Most of the players who fell by the wayside are reputable names in the poker community and the fact that Nick emerged victorious is a remarkable fete by itself.
To emerge the winner and take home $2, 910,227, Nick defeated a total of 105 entrants including a fellow American, Elio Fox, who won $1, 798,658. Aymon Hata finished third to win $1,247,230.
Second Gold Bracelet
The win took Nick’s gold bracelet tally to 2. He won his first bracelet in 2015 in $3,000 No-limit Hold’em Shootout event. Nick has a knack for high roller events as evidenced by his track record. As a matter of fact, his lifetime earnings as a poker player stand at $11.7 million.
In an interview after the event, Petrangelo was quick to note that he had had a tiresome week after having participated in the Super High Roller Bowl where he finished in the 6th position.
Event #5 summary
The event had a slow start with only a handful registering. However, as the day progressed, the number had grown to 97 players where only 49 survived the day 1 cut. Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Erik Seidel are some of the heavyweights who were eliminated in Day 1.
In Day two, the overall number of participants shot to 105, thanks to late registration remaining open for the first two levels. Consequently, the prize pool grew to a staggering $10,185,000. Interestingly, Phil Ivey was one of the late entrants after more than three years on the sidelines. However, Ivey was unable to leave a mark after losing a flip to Stephen Chidwick.
Other members of the top brass who were eliminated in Day 2 include Brian Rask, Tom Marchese, and Jake Schindler.
With only 10 players remaining, Nick Petrangelo had already cruised to a remarkable chip lead. Among the ten, Chris Moore was the first to face the axe followed closely by Jason Koon, Fedor Holz and Jason Koon. The final 6 made up the final table for Day 4.
Day 4 started competitively and the first elimination occurred in the second level. Unwittingly, Stephen Chidwick lost a sizeable amount of chips to Hata after going all in for 10 big blinds. At the time, Bryn Kenney was already on the short stack and it wasn’t long before he was sent packing by Fox. Fox paired on the river to triumph against a small pair that Kenney had initially picked.
Also in the second level, Eiler’s trip jacks were no match for Nick Petrangelo’s full house. Eiler finished fourth. Aymon Hata was sent packing in similar fashion after petrangelo picked a straight on the river against his top pair picked on the flop.
Fox’s pursuit for a second bracelet came to an abrupt end when he chanced his two pair at the fall of the flop against Petrangelo’s superior two pair on the river.
